Joe’s restaurant on Abbot-Kinney in Venice, California is a delight and a deal. Michelin thinks so, having just given this French-California gem a star. And my entire family agrees, and we are not always the most agreeable foursome. Our recent love affair with Joe’s began when I took my husband there for his birthday lunch several weeks ago. A friend joined our table. We ordered from a three course prix fixe menu that ran about $17.00. There was also a two-course lunch with many choices that was much cheaper. The dishes were innovative and fun, reminiscent of my favorite French or Bay Area menus (Larkspur Inn, Aqua, French Laundry). Even the bread was incredible. The service was great and, important to me, flexible and easy.

You ordered Grilled Ostrich last night? Venison medallions in cherry sauce? Roast duck breast that tasted like the best gelato you ever had? Killer game splattered everywhere - into all soups and on top of all salads?

It's not about over-abundance, although it sort of is. I'm not the kind
of person who loads their plate up full to the brim -- in fact, I don't
even like it when my food groups touch, although that's part of it,
too, I guess, the fact that you can have multiple plates, like as many
as you want. Like an egg plate (any omelet you want, scrambled eggs,
bacon, sausage) and a fish plate (high-end fish, like Nova Scotia
salmon and seared albacore and shrimp) and a fruit plate and a turkey
plate (if you actually wanted roast turkey and all the trimmings for
breakfast) and a konchee plate, whatever that custardy konchee stuff is
(and I'm not even sure I'm spelling it right) and a sushi plate, made
fresh there right at the bar, and I don't even want to discuss the
dessert plate although I have to mention the candy apple.

A good thing about having a sister who owns a restaurant – and The
River Café is a great one in my opinion – is that when she’s cooking my
son is allowed to order off the menu. In his case it’s the most
wonderful creamy pasta carbonara. Made special for him with egg yolks
the color of the Dutch flag, pancetta peppered and the parmesean cheese
carried from Parma,I guess. The bad thing is that my sister won’t let
me have any.

I was having a particularly bad day. I won't go into details but
imagine college freshmen year and you can fill in the rest. As I
walked towards my dorm
I saw the longest line I had ever seen and remembered that Beard Papa,
the Japanese bakery that sold only cream puffs had just opened. A
cream puff is the only thing that will cheer me up, I decided, and I
got on the end of the block long line. After I stood there a few
minutes, a homeless man, do-rag and all, came up to me and aked, "You
waitin' in line for a cream puff?" He was astonished.
