It’s not really fair to have a pick of the week that’s as obscure as
this one, but we were in Maine for a family wedding and my sister and I
just had to go up to the Green Spot or the G-Spot as Lucy Dahl calls
it, since we were almost in shouting distance. And we
wanted to meet Brenda and Tanya and see the store. Also, Brenda
promised lunch, not just lunch, "lobster roll the way it should be
done," she kept insisting.
So, despite a couple ridiculous hassles (don’t start me on U.S. Airways
and Delia’s plane being delayed or mine being cancelled a day later),
we ventured out past
7 fried clam sandwich stands by the side of the road (two of which I
confess we stopped at), felled by the sign that said, “Best Blueberry
Pie ever”, straight up that driveway we went, Greatest clam chowder
ever, we were there. So after the irresistible onion rings,
the ok fried clams, the 7 chocolates they also sold at the blueberry
pie store, and I must confess, a fried fish sandwich that was almost
something to twitter about, In any event, we sheepishly phoned Brenda
from the road as we were just hitting Augusta as we had been
instructed.
The reason she’d insisted we call when we were five minutes away was
so that she
could put the live lobster in the pot, right then and there. Then she
melted butter and slathered it lightly (can you lightly slather
something) on a fabulous bun, which she then let sit for awhile before
toasting in a dry frying pan. And then she assembled the lobster with
barely any mayonnaise set it on the French toast roll and the whole
thing sort of melts in your mouth in some way I can’t even describe. It
isn’t too rich and on any other day, I bet I could have eaten more than
one. The
problem is, I have no idea what I’m going to do when I get a hankering
for it. It’s awfully far to go for a sandwich, but I may have to go
back to Maine next year!
